Safety Measurement System
Within the Comprehensive Safety Analysis (CSA 2010) Operational Model, the Safety Measurement System (SMS) quantifies the on-road safety performance of carriers and drivers to identify candidates for interventions, to determine the specific safety problems exhibited by a carrier or driver, and to monitor whether safety problems are improving or worsening. SMS replaces SafeStat in the new operational model.
The carrier SMS uses a motor carrier’s data from roadside inspections, including all safety-based violations, State-reported crashes, and the Federal motor carrier census to quantify performance in the following Behavior Analysis Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs).

About CSA 2010 – What Is It?
Comprehensive Safety Analysis 2010, CSA 2010, is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve large truck and bus safety and ultimately reduce commercial motor vehicle (CMV)-related crashes, injuries and fatalities. It introduces a new enforcement and compliance model that allows FMCSA and its State partners to contact a larger number of carriers earlier in order to address safety problems before crashes occur. When the program is fully rolled out by the end of 2010, FMCSA will have a new nationwide system for making the roads safer for motor carriers and the public alike!

Reverse Logistics: Money Tree or Money Pit?
by Gail Dutton
July 4, 2010
Reverse logistics—the process of returning, recovering, testing, repairing, restocking, reshipping and disposing of products—doesn’t have to be a money pit. Savvy companies are using it to contain costs, boost revenue and buttress customer loyalty.
A recent study by the Aberdeen Group puts numbers to those assertions. Specifically, in the report “Reverse Logistics: Driving Improved Returns directly to the Bottom Line,” the Aberdeen Groups says that companies with best-in-class reverse logistics processes slashed the time it took to return parts from nearly 17 days to just over 4 days. The cost of repairs dropped 10 percent last year, compared to only 4 percent decreases for everyone else. Customer satisfaction was high at 93 percent, versus 81 percent for all others.

IFW Report by Damian Brett | Thu, 24 Jun 2010
The price of containers has hit a 20-year high as a result of a shortage that has reached “critical” levels.
Analyst AXS Alphaliner said the current price of a new 20ft dry box had increase from US$2,000 per unit at the end of last year to $2,750 today.
The analyst’s figures show this is the highest price since 1991 and far above the average for the last 10 years of between $1,500 and $2,400.

U.S. railroads’ carloadings plummeted to the lowest of low points last year — as in a 21-year low. Yesterday, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) announced U.S. carloads, which fell 16.1 percent vs. 2008 to 13.8 million units, reached their lowest level since 1988. Intermodal traffic fared only slightly better, dropping 14.1 percent year-over-year to 9.9 million units, the lowest volume since 2002.
At least U.S. railroads ended 2009 on a promising note: Carloads fell only 4.1 percent and intermodal volume rose 2.5 percent in December.
